Best recyclability

environement-enPlasteel® is made of steel and plastic. Both of these products can be recycled easily without causing any damage to the environment. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classifies steel as 100% environmentally responsive. According to California EPA, steel wheel weights are the best overall alternative to lead since steel has lower environmental and human health impacts and propensity to be made from recycled material (click here).

The steel recycling process involves grinding the products, which will detach plastic from steel. Both substances are subsequently separated using magnetic or flotation processes. The result is that both materials are recycled.

Why are steel based products like Plasteel® better for the environment? Old zinc wheel weights, thrown in a wheel weight recycling pail at the garage, are mixed with lead weights. Since zinc and lead have similar melting points, it is very difficult to separate them from one another. If lead is left in zinc it cannot be considered a “lead-free” product. On the other hand, if zinc is left in lead it becomes incompatible with battery making which is the main use for recycled lead. In any case, as soon as zinc is mixed with lead, recycling is difficult and this is why steel based products are better for the environment.

Furthermore, the Environment Protection Agency (EPA) and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) have put zinc on the list of hazardous substances that pose the most significant potential threat to human health due to their known or suspected toxicity (click here). In addition, zinc is considered by the EPA to be secondary water contaminant.
